Growing up as the only daughter of a teacher and a dentist, Tara Funk always had a deep understanding of the value of education. She began her adult career as a classroom teacher and Teach for America corps member but quickly moved into a twenty-year career developing and delivering educational materials.
In February of 2013, Tara was at the top of her game, working as an Executive Editor for Scholastic Education, developing materials designed to teach children to read and write. And then the bottom fell out. As it was described to her two sons, kindergarten and third grade at the time, “a little piece of her heart broke” and when she awakened from her coma, Tara would begin the process of rebuilding from a solid foundation.
It took a some time and a lot of work, but Tara is now rebuilding. In 2015, she and the team of doctors and nurses who helped save her life were featured in a NewYork Daily News article entitled “Amazing Surgery,” which helped to fund the work of St. Francis Hospital in her home town of Port Washington. In the story’s aftermath, Tara was encouraged to start sharing her story in her own words. Two years later, in 2017, Tara presented her story which she titled “Adjust Your Sails” on the TEDx stage at Adelphi University.
Since that time, she has been building her personal and professional consulting practice which focuses on helping individuals facing unplanned and unforeseen challenges and businesses seeking to deliver frictionless experiences for their customers. Tara’s story is compelling, but it is her ability to help others transform themselves that is Tara’s superpower.
